General
What is flamework glass?
Flamework, also known as lampwork glass, is glass that has been melted and shaped using a torch or flame to create decorative items, such as beads, sculptures, and ornaments. The term "lampwork" comes from the early days of the technique, when glass was heated over an oil lamp.
Using a surface mix torch of oxygen + propane, I will melt the glass in 1,800-2,000 degree flame and create a bead or cabochon on a stainless steel mandrel. The mandrel is pre-dipped in a ceramic release to prevent the glass from permanently sticking to the metal.
Next, the finished glass piece is placed in a temperature controlled kiln to slowly cool down the glass, preventing any stress fracture.
Wait... those casted botanicals used to be real plants?
Yes! The casting process involves pouring molten silver into a mold to create a three-dimensional design. Each element is casted using this method and was a REAL plant and/or botanical. I've carefully sourced all casted pieces from a fellow jewelry maker.
Where do you get your gemstones?
I carefully source all my stones as well, and in 2024, for the very first time, I went to Tucson, Arizona! Every year, in late Jan through mid Feb, Tucson hosts the largest gem + mineral show in the world. More details can be found on blog.
I'm very particular about the chosen stones and only offer the best quality as possible. I would never sell a piece that I wouldn't wear myself.
Favorite vendor/show story?
At an event, an older woman fell in love with several bracelets. Mind you, these were chunky pieces… hand-wrapped gemstones, various beads and pearls in sterling silver. She asked me how much.
I said, “$295.”
It was at this point, she got super excited and picked up more bracelets trying to decide which one she wanted. Then she called over to another woman…
"Jan, Jan! Check out these bracelets! They are two dollars and ninety-five cents!"
I smiled sweetly and said, "No ma'am, that's two hundred ninety-five dollars."
She dropped it like a hot potato and started screeching to her friend, complaining how would anyone pay that. I merely just died with laughter.☺♥
